I have a FRS/GMRS question:?

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

If I am planning on using my FRS/GMRS two-way radio in the GMRS mode ONLY in case of an emergency (tornado, etc), should I go through the expense of getting a GMRS license?

Do they really enforce GMRS licenses?

    Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

I was browsing Amazon one time and it seems like those 36 mile 2 way radios are in a way ‘hot sellers’.
I’m thinking that the majority of the people who purchase these high distance 2 way radios aren’t aware of the GMRS licensing they are required to obtain.

So do they really enforce the GMRS licensing?

Also, I’v been looking around the internet and it seems like channels 15-22 (or more?) are required to have a GMRS license BUT what if you use a preset on those channels 15-22 that allow you to have 38 presets?

      YAESU FT-60R Ham Radio Mod?

      Friday, September 24th, 2010

I just bought my first ham radio, a Yaesu FT-60R. I previously had some cheap GMRS/FRS Midland 2-way radio, but it was not repeater capable.

I heard in order to Tx on GMRS frequencies you need to modify the ham radio and remove a resistant chip on the radio.

First, I have the GMRS license, but is it illegal to use/mod a ham radio to operate in GMRS Frequencies? All I want is to be able to Tx on a GMRS repeater in my area.

What do I need to cut out the chip, or how do I do it?

Here is a website I found that somewhat guides you….

Also, what other radio can I get that is just GMRS and is repeater capable?

Best method for two-way air/ground communication for GA aircraft that doesn't require ground station license?

      Saturday, May 15th, 2010

I am a pilot looking for a way to communicate legally with a person on the ground (close range/line of sight). A portable aviation radio is not an option as it requires a ground station license when used outside of an aircraft. Would like to avoid 2 meter because of its license requirement as well. Do two-way FRS/GMRS radios like those sold at Radio Shack work for this application? Is there another technology?
John, thank you for your answer. I am aware of the GMRS license and would happily pay the fee if I knew the radio would work for my purpose. I will check out the links you provided. Thanks for your help.
Just for reference, I came across a post by Bob Gardner (author of Say Again, Please) on Usenet:

Unicom and multicom stations are licensed to use those frequencies. There are no aviation frequencies for the kind of use you propose. Go buy a couple of those walkie-talkies they sell just about everywhere and use them.

I gather from the suggestion that he feels the radios could work, technically, I will give them a try.

Why do most all TWO-Way Radios (GMRS/FRS) boat such a huge range, when in fact range is significantly less?

      Thursday, May 6th, 2010

For example, I am very interested and will most likely purchase a new 2-way radio (GMRS/FRS), specifically the Cobra LI-7200/2WXVP GMRS 2-Way Radio Value Pack that boasts a 27 (that’s TWENTY-SEVEN) mile range, when, in fact, from reading many, many reviews, the most that has been reported is maybe 2 miles?

Now, I understand that there are MANY factors involved, such as urban usage – buildings, houses, cars, trees, etc., but seriously, that is more than a 75% difference. Where are "they" coming up with those astronomical figures? Are the using the ocean, or airspace as their testing grounds?

You know, Walt Disney World covers about 47 square miles which is about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands – so what good are these or any other two-way radios?

If you mention skiing in the mountains, don’t bother cause I was using a 2-way radio while skiing in Colorado and took a wrong turn and ended up literally in the streets of town and I couldn’t contact any of my party for assistance which led me to walking 2 miles in my rented ski-boots just to find a bus. Now, I am from Florida and let me tell you, we aren’t used to ski boots when they are attached to skis, so don’t think us boys down here like them any better now.
In my title, I meant to type "boast", not "boat".
A GMRS license? Yeah, right. Then why don’t they include one (or information)when you purchase any GMRS 2-way radios that are for sale to the public? The ones I am referring to are the maximum power output allowed by law.

Click below for the 2-way radios I am referring to:

"marketing hype"? Seriously, it sounds to me like "false advertising", in which case, a lawsuit should be filed, eh?
